Red Spring Break 2016

Spring Break for us starts on April 1, which is this Friday and we have a half day, and ends on April 8. Some of us go to different states or just stay in Michigan but go other places besides Laingsburg. Here’s what all of our Red class is doing for spring break.
Sam M. is just staying in Laingsburg and not doing anything. Micheal R. is going up north. Miana already took a break and went to California. Jack is going to Destin, Florida. Jordan (Jojo) is going to Disney World in Florida. Hailey is going to a mall. Claire isn’t going anywhere. Konnor is going to Washington D.C. Elizabeth is going to Canada. Anna is going to her grandparents house. Parker isn’t doing anything. Gabe might go to Tennessee. Taylor doesn’t know what he’s doing. Logan is not doing anything. Clayton isn’t going anywhere but he’s planning on playing outside. Allison isn’t going anywhere. Autumn is going to Toronto, Canada. And our teacher Mrs. Kurka is shopping for her new house.
The government thinks that they can hack into San Bernardino, the terrorists IPhone without Apples help. The government thinks that once the IPhone is unlocked it will have loads of information on the December 2nd terrorists attack, which was the deadliest terrorist attack since 9/11. Many people are worried that once this IPhone is hacked the privacy of everyone else that owns an IPhone will be violated. People think that they need to decide as a nation how much power the government should have over their data and privacy. The government argues that Apple is not above the law and the company should just do what they are told. Both points have positives and negatives, for Apple the negative is everyone loses their privacy, the positives are they could get a lot of information on the terrorist. For the government they gain information, but they could cause Apple to lose thousands because of the loss of privacy.

Yesterday at the U.S capitol, police shot and wounded a suspected gunman. The entire complex was immediately locked down as police raced inside and terrified tourists ran for cover. The shooting occurred shortly after 2:30 pm after the man set off an alarm while going through a metal detector and "drew what appeared to be a weapon and pointed it at a police officer," Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said. The gunman was immediately shot by a police officer, Verderosa said. He was undergoing surgery and his condition was not known, the chief added. The suspect was later identified as 66-year-old Larry Russell Dawson, from Antioch, Tenn. Sources said he had a realistic looking pistol-type pellet gun.
Late Monday, police announced that Dawson was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer while armed. He was listed in stable but critical condition and will be arraigned when he is released, the Capitol Police said in a statement.

There was a terrorist attack in Brussels, Belgium,  today/this morning.

The terrorist exploded in an airport and there were about 28 dead and 90 hurt/injured. Another bomb exploded in the subway.

French people feel scared and worried because it is close to France. Maybe the attack was done by Salah Abdelslam's runaway friends.

The hospital of Valenciennes (15min away from our school) welcomes the people who were hurt in the attack.

Laingsburg Middle School jazz band students had a performance on Saturday, the 21st, at the Laingsburg High School. They were the opening performance for the high school jazz band. They played 4 songs, which were; Eye Of The Tiger, Night Train, Heard It Through The Grapevine, and The Final Countdown. There are 2 jazz bands, they combined twice before the performance, including practicing with the high schoolers once. They learned more notes, and new rhythms. The students gained more confidence, as they played. This was Laingsburg Middle School’s second jazz band performance. They played to raise money for the high school jazz band, and regular band. There was dinner for the audience, such as mashed potatoes, soup, spanish rice, white rice, sweet and sour chicken, and salad. For dessert, there was chocolate cake, and cookies, and for drinks there was lemonade, tea, and water. The audience had a great time. Mr. Cousineau, the band director, was expecting to have 125 people, but instead they had to add extra seats, cook more food, and have more tables, because there was more people than he expected. In all, there was about 200 people. Overall this was a great performance for both the high school jazz band, and middle school jazz band.
Today is Chloé H's birthday!!! She is turning 14.

The terrorist Salah Abdelslam was arrested in Molenbeek in Belgium. It is the terrorist of the terrorist attacks of November 13th in Paris. To arrest him the policemen shot him in the knee and dragged him to the car. The policemen have searched other apartments and they found ADN traces of Salah A. on a glass.
He has not expressed any regrets. He is in jail now and he cannot see anyone.

Because of terrorist attacks we did a confinement exercise/training today. We went under the tables, we turned off the lights, we closed the blinds and the windows and listened to the radio.

The salary of the teachers is going to be raised (1%).
The teachers have marched in the streets to ask for it; the salaries are too low and the salaries have been frozen for ten years.
The salaries have been frozen because of the economic crisis. The government has saved money (billions!).

The I-Believe Program

The I-believe program allows students to express feeling or ideas about what they believe in. It sparks discussion and about a topic. It was created by Evan Draim. I-believe is a non-profit organization based in the United States. It was founded with the belief that every individual including you and I have the power to make a difference in the societies we live in, working towards a sustainable future. Their mission is to inspire and empower individuals to donate their efforts and or money to local projects they care about whether it is helping fellow human beings, conserving the environment or protecting animals. All of Mrs. Kurka’s classes participated in the program. The beliefs range from gender equality to equal rights. Here are some examples that our class has created.

We do many things in around the world. We pick a country and we each get topics to study for a month some of the topics are food, fashion, famous people, games, religion, holidays, and History. The food people get recipes, and at the end of the month people can volunteer to bring food, cups, plates, and silverware. We also share all of the information we got. This month we are doing Mexico. Another thing we do is current events. We get a current topic we ask the teacher and then research it. After that we share the information that we got. Another thing we do is write to the pen pal.
