The Detroit Public Schools are 327 million dollars in debt. A city wide “teacher sick-out” shut down 88 Detroit schools on January 21, 2016,causing 44,790 students to miss class according to the Detroit Public school system. The ceilings in the classrooms are caving in,the floorboards are coming off and warping. Teachers held the sick out protest in run down buildings. There are mushrooms growing in the building on the floors and walls. Teachers are frustrated at Detroit Public School system because teachers pay was cut by 10 percent and the cost of the health care packages has increased. Students have to sit on windowsills due to the lack of desks, and classes are held in the gym.
